Josh Newton is a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at University of California, San Diego. He received his Ph.D. in Urban Planning and Public Policy at the University of Texas at Arlington. His research draws on critical theories and mixed methods to examine housing precarity and non-capitalist solutions in the context of neoliberal governance and policy. He is currently co-author of research projects on the impact of philanthropic community development initiatives, housing precarity and grassroots solutions in peri-urban U.S. informal subdivisions and urban single-room occupancy buildings, and the economic and political benefits of community land trusts and limited equity housing cooperatives. Outside of academia, he co-founded an advocacy organization, San Diego Community Wealth Building Coalition, that works to support and expand community land trusts and housing, worker, and food cooperatives through education, policy advocacy, and consultation.
