Lefèvre, S. & Berthiaume, A. & Leduc, L. (2016). Béati, un modèle de philanthropie alternatif ? Accompagner le changement social en le finançant.

The working paper is now on line!

We offer an analysis of the activities of a philanthropic actor seeking to deploy an alternative approach — in its values and operations as much as in its relationship with the organizations it funds — through a case study of Béati Foundation. Drawing on a two year (2014-2016) ethnographic inquiry comprised of individual interviews and participant observation, we: 1) Describe the Foundation’s practices and situate them within the framework of Social Change Philanthropy; and 2) Explore the tensions related to the donor/ donee relationship and the efforts of the Foundation to disable the power relationship inherent in funding through an analysis of individual and group interviews with funded associations. Finally, we situate the Béati Foundation within Quebec’s broader philanthropic landscape, which has undergone transformations that have altered the relations between the Béati Foundation and the private sector, the State and community organizations. We conclude with a question concerning Beati’s contributions to debates relevant to Quebec’s philanthropic landscape.
