An overwiew of the points expressed at the Institut Mallet 2023 Summit
The fourth Summit on Philanthropic Culture, held by the Institut Mallet, provided an opportunity to discuss “the evolution from community philanthropy to socially transformative philanthropy”, as Mr. Jean M. Gagné suggested in his opening address. The summit highlighted the fact that evolving philanthropy can take many forms, the most advanced of which might be the following two. The first would be philanthropy transformed to adapt to major transformations (e.g. climate change or the COVID-19 pandemic). The second configuration is transformational philanthropy, aimed at transforming society and its components, notably the societal paradigm and the dominant systems of activity. This presupposes a coalition or alliance between major players to engage in a “great social transformation” in the sense given by Karl Polanyi.
