In Canada, the perpetual existence of foundations has become the norm in the world of philanthropy. It is based on a legal framework that allows foundations to preserve, and even increase, their assets indefinitely. In parallel, however, a movement of “limited-life foundations” has developed, which deliberately choose to limit their lifespan. While this philanthropic movement remains marginal in the Canadian context, it opens up promising avenues for action and reflection.

To better document it, PhiLab has formed a research team in partnership with the Ivey Foundation, which is halfway through its closure process. This infographic summarizes the first phase of this research and its main findings.
