Special Edition: The Demographics of Philanthropy

Published on February 17 2020

The donation of one’s time and money is deeply entrenched in Canadian values. Over four out of five Canadians give to charities, while close to half of the population claim to volunteer. This being said, it is fundamental to point out that these acts of generosity are far from being expressed in the same way for all citizens. As a general rule, the ways in which individuals give or participate in philanthropy differ greatly from one person to the next. Many variables come into play when trying to explain these differences: sex, age, level of income, professional status, beliefs, location, etc. By exploring the demographic factors that affect the philanthropic behaviour of Canadians, this special edition on the demographics of philanthropy exposes the sociological complexity that hides behind these small gestures that are so essential to the day to day functioning of our society.
