This survey, conducted among Canadian philanthropic foundations, is part of research that initially focused on the place of disability and the limited support it receives in the philanthropic field. As the project progressed, however, we noticed a shift: the issue of disability was gradually being erased or diluted under the broad umbrella of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), without DEI really taking into account the specific issues related to disability. To better understand this shift and how DEI is understood by foundations, we decided to supplement our research with a short survey.
Produced in collaboration with the Mirella and Lino Saputo Foundation and Humanity & Inclusion, and with the support of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), this project aims to analyze how DEI policies and trends influence funding decisions and to highlight causes that remain underfunded—first and foremost among them disability.
