Justification of research project

In a context marked by rapid political, social, and digital transformations, the relationship between philanthropy and social movements is undergoing significant changes. This research project aims to analyze these relationships in Quebec, with a particular focus on the issues of funding, governance, and autonomy within social movements.

Research purpose

The objective is twofold:

– To better understand the current dynamics between philanthropic actors and social movements

– To shed light on best practices in order to support initiatives dedicated to social and environmental justice

Research approach

The project is structured around several key dimensions:

1. Trajectories of social movements

  • Origins, evolution, and transformations of mobilizations
  • Contemporary challenges and priority issues

2. Relations with philanthropy

  • Funding sources and forms of collaboration
  • Tensions between activist autonomy and funders’ requirements
  • Effects of funding on strategies and priorities

3. Political and institutional context

  • Evolution of the regulatory and political environment
  • Relations with public institutions
  • Recognition of the role of social movements

4. Digitalization and surveillance issues

  • Use of digital tools in mobilizations
  • Transformation of organizational practices
  • Risks related to traceability, data security, and surveillance

5. Strategies and outlook

  • Strategies for action and influence
  • Impact assessment
  • Recommendations for strengthening ties between philanthropy and social movements
