Journalism has long been seen as an essential pillar of democracy. Today, in the face of growing mis- and disinformation, much of it perpetrated by malevolent actors trying to erode trust in elections and institutions, access to reliable and relevant information is more important than ever. At the same time, the news industry is facing a perfect storm of obstacles, including declining trust and an increasingly challenged business model. Local news is the bedrock of local democracy, and quality journalism is essential to a just society.
Local news and information have the power to revitalize community connection and support local democracy across Canada. Despite being increasingly in trouble, quality local news and information are inextricably linked to the quality of life in a community. Community foundations’ concern about community resilience should put them on the front lines of supporting local news and information. This infographic summarizes 5 case studies carried out as part of the a collaborative research between Concordia University and OCAD University, funded by PhiLab and with the support of Community Foundations of Canada.
